What New Jersey requires — and where this map comes from

Every NJ public-school district must align its K–12 curriculum to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Math and English were revised in 2023 (ELA in classrooms from September 2024, Math from September 2025). Science follows the 2020 NJSLS-S — New Jersey’s adoption of the three-dimensional NGSS performance expectations — and Social Studies follows the 2020 NJSLS-SS (U.S. history, world history, and active citizenship, informed by the C3 framework), both adopted June 2020.

Reading the map: height is grade level (K at the base, 12 at the top); color is the strand; dot size is how foundational a skill is — the more later learning that builds on it, the bigger its dot. Lines are prerequisite links.

How this map aligns: the K–8 skills derive from Marble’s open learning taxonomy, which follows the Common Core — the framework the NJSLS mirror. The grades 7–12 layer was authored by Beyond Young and tagged with NJSLS codes; tap any of those dots and its standard code appears on the card. Grades 10–12 content is structurally validated but still awaiting teacher review.

Learning to Learn is not an NJSLS subject — it’s a cross-cutting layer from Marble’s taxonomy covering study skills and self-regulation (asking for help, checking your own work, persisting when it’s hard). It’s included because 64 prerequisite links from the four NJSLS subjects above point into it.
